Trained with the Newcastle Knights in the NRL, John began his career in the New South Wales Cup with the reserve side of his hometown club at the age of 19. He then spent five seasons in the NRL feeder competition, playing 39 matches and scoring 3 tries.

In 2024, he embarked on a new adventure in Europe and moved to France, joining Saint-Gaudens in the Super XIII competition. Thanks to his strong performances in the Comminges region, he later signed with reigning French champions Albi. During the 2025/2026 season, he played both in the second row and at prop, although his team unfortunately fell to Carcassonne in the semi-finals.

A new challenge now awaits the versatile Australian forward, who arrives in Toulouse to further strengthen the Olympian pack. Over the past two Super XIII seasons, he has played 30 matches and scored 7 tries.

« I’m just grateful for the opportunity the clubs giving me, I’ve seen what they are building and I cant wait to be apart of it! » – John Toleafoa

The Toulouse coaching staff is delighted with the signing, which significantly strengthens the forward pack :  “We wanted to reinforce our pack, and we’ve done that by signing John. He came to France over the past two years hoping to earn an opportunity to play in the Super League, and now that opportunity has arrived. He will bring us power, physical impact, and toughness. I’m certain he will make the most of this opportunity.” – Sylvain Houles, Toulouse Olympique Head Coach
